A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
